Appearance info:
Amazing Spider-Man #149
“Even If I Live, I Die!”
Story length: 18 pages
-Scarlet Spider appearance:
- Page count: 5
- Panel count: 18
- Word balloon count: 14 (approximate)
- Significance of appearance: The first published appearance of Peter Parker’s clone, who would come to be known as Ben Reilly and later the Scarlet Spider. The two Peters battle over who is the real Spider-Man for the first time. Because of their identical appearances, a lot of their dialogue could be attributed to one or the other, hence the approximation for the word balloon count. Both the clone and the Jackal appear to die at the end of the issue. The clone’s portion of the story in this issue is recounted in the back-up story of Spectacular Spider-Man #217, sometimes with dialogue and panels matching the original, making this issue less essential given the added context provided by the back-up stories. Page 17 panel 6 to page 18 panel 1 occur simultaneously with Spider-Man #51 “Who Am I?” page 10. Page 18 panel 2 to page 27 occur simultaneously with Spectacular Spider-Man #217 “The Burial” page 1 to page 5.
