Added Namorita #1

Namorita 1 - Nita close-upWe take a brief break from closing our gap from 2013 to the present to add a rare comic book from 1993!

Namorita #1 was a custom comic book made with the nonprofit Arise Foundation and the Metro-Dade Police Department of Florida. Marvel Comics has produced these types of custom promotional comics for decades, and still lists the service on their website. They are often given away for free through alternate channels and rarely get traditional distribution to newsstands or comic book stores. Namorita #1 is so rare that even Fabian Nicieza was unaware of its existence until it was recently brought to his attention on Facebook.

Namorita 1 - Nita vs drug dealers

Namorita #1 was written by Barry Dutter with art by Darren Auck and Bill Anderson. Colorist Mark Bernardo and letterer Dave Sharpe rounded out the creative team. Editing was handled by Glenn Herdling, assisted by Hector Collazo. The 18-page story heavily featured Namorita, as you’d expect (she appears on 14 pages). Apparently she enrolled in summer courses at Florida International University in Miami. While there she and some campus friends end up busting some drug dealers run by Hydro-Man. Her friends are involved in a local community group and call themselves Enviro-Mentors (complete with t-shirts).

Namorita 1 - Nita arrives

Placing this in the character’s history is a bit tricky. By 1993, Namorita didn’t really look like how she appears here. Her hair was still growing back from the brutal encounter with the Sea Urchin from New Warriors #14. Her personality and appearance are more in line with how she was being depicted around 1990. Darren Auck’s version of Namorita seems more in-line with John Byrne’s version of the character from the early issues of Namor the Sub-Mariner. Normally I wouldn’t use something like hair length to determine placement, as it’s pretty easy for artists to be inconsistent with it. But it was such a key visual to the character for a couple of years that also lines up well with changes to her personality. So despite the 1993 publication date, I’m going to push this back considerably, all the way to Volume 1 – Part 1, right after New Warriors #1 but before their battle with Juggernaut in Thor #411 where a gap of time between the two issues is mentioned by Firestar. Thor #411 also mention a special session of the United States Congress being called, which probably means that story took place in August, when Congress traditional goes on recess. (For more on how the first year of New Warriors lines up on an in-universe calendar, see the beta Timeline.)

I've studied superheroes for most of my life. So who better to make some sense of it all?

  1. Your date of 1993 is accurate . These were distributed during the 1993-1994 Miami Public Schools School Year to classes participating in the Arise Foundation-Florida International University “Enviro-Mentors” Project. College students, “Enviro-Mentors,” had one hour weekly sessions(teacher took a break!) with elementary school students, developing respect for “self, family, community, and environment.” Arise Foundation manuals and other teaching materials, formed the basis of these sessions. At the time, a full-sized mock-up of the “EPA Toxics Release Inventory” Namorita panel was up for a while in the lobby entrance of the EPA’s Washington DC headquarters.

How do I know? I’m Prof. Hogner, illustrated in the same panel.
